Languages

At Drapers Pyrgo Primary school, we chose Spanish as a language to teach students. Spanish is the second most spoken language globally and it is highly phonetic. This makes it easier to learn since it’s pronounced as it’s written.

From Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), children are introduced to Spanish through songs, basic greetings, and vocabulary. As students’ progress from Key Stage 1 and beyond, they learn more vocabulary, simple phrases, and engage in conversations. By Year 3, pupils start to read and write in Spanish.

We follow the Language Angels program, which offers interactive, engaging lessons through innovative units and resources.

To celebrate the diversity of our school community, we encourage parents and carers to share their native languages in the classroom. Our goal is to foster a multi-lingual environment, promoting an appreciation of diversity alongside the European language we have chosen. We aim to deepen understanding of different cultures and languages by sharing stories, traditions, and experiences. Ultimately, we want our students to enhance their language skills while gaining a deeper understanding of other cultures, languages, and educational systems.
