Art
At Drapers’ Pyrgo Priory the arts form a central part of school life and learning. Essential skills are taught through a progressive curriculum across the school centred on a range of mediums including painting, drawing, printing, collage, fabrics and ceramics. All our art units are based on following a process that involves the use of sketchbooks to plan and prepare pieces based on a starting point, and the review of outcomes when the work is completed.
Our art curriculum is linked to other aspects of the curriculum giving it more meaning and supporting learning across all subjects. It is also led by our Vice Principal who has expertise in this field through previous employment. A dedicated link governor supports the implementation of art in the school.
Visual arts are celebrated through a range of displays in the school, some semi-permanent and collaborative, which reflect our high standards. A half-termly art award is also given to children in all year groups whilst a prestigious Foundation Day award is given annually. As well as a dedicated art week, we also hold an annual art exhibition for the whole school, attended by parents, carers, children and governors, which includes demonstrations and interactive arts.
Knowledge of the lives and techniques of famous artists is also a key element of our learning both within the subject and through assemblies and displays.
Our arts provision is enhanced the inclusion of a dedicated art studio, a high volume ceramics kiln, an outdoor theatre and a range of tools and resources to support learning.
Furthermore, we provide extra-curricular opportunities with clubs, competitions (internal e.g. Easter bonnet design and external) and visiting bodies providing courses and clubs.
We also recognise the importance of the arts in developing children holistically and supporting SEMH needs as well as attendance. We aim to be inclusive ensuring that all children access all arts learning and events, including Pupil Premium children visiting Tate Modern each year and a minimum of 40% of pupils being members of any arts clubs. Elements of the arts are included in our Pyrgo Pledge, a charter guaranteeing children certain aspects of cultural capital whilst in the school.
