Exciting transformations at Drapers' Pyrgo
Back to Latest NewsDrapers’ Pyrgo Priory School has a rich and fascinating history and has been in the heart of the Harold Hill community since 1952. The building was constructed using parts from a World War II aircraft hangar in Hornchurch which was dismantled and reused to construct the school building which stands today. The original metal sheeting from the aircraft hangar was incorporated into its façade, making it a distinctive feature of the school building. This not only serves as a historical reminder of the past but also adds character and a sense of continuity to the school's identity.
Throughout the summer break, the school was a hub of activity as preparations were made to renovate various areas and enhance the space, making it more inviting for students, staff, and visitors.
The exterior of the school building had started to show signs of wear, with faded paint on the metal façade and weathered walls in need of attention. In an uplifting display of community spirit, employees from GRAHAM Construction volunteered their time and skills to repaint the school’s exterior, revitalising the building and creating a brighter, more welcoming appearance.
Dan Cawthra GRAHAM Head of Stakeholder & Community Engagement said, “The team were delighted to have been able to support Drapers’ Pyrgo School. The vibrant colours and fresh paint have not only given the building a new life but has created a positive and uplifting atmosphere for pupils and staff”.
We were extremely grateful to have received a generous donation from Dulux Decorator Centre, which supplied us with all the paint and an extensive array of painting tools, including brushes, rollers, protective sheets, and t-shirts for our volunteers. Their support has been crucial in enhancing the school’s appearance as part of this community initiative.
Clare Green, Multi-site Manager at Dulux Decorator Centre, said: “As a former Pyrgo Priory School pupil myself, I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to give back to both my old school and the local community. Dulux Decorator Centre are passionate about supporting community initiatives by providing paint and collaborating on the resources needed for these projects. Our goal is to make a positive impact in local environments by offering sustainable products that can brighten these spaces and enhance the impact these areas have on the community. We’re delighted to see the impact our donations have had on the school’s painting project.”
This wonderful initiative not only brought a fresh new look to the primary school, but it also demonstrated the power of community involvement in improving our shared spaces. Over the course of several days, volunteers worked side by side with brushes and rollers in hand.
This project is a testament to how collective effort can make a lasting impact, and we are incredibly grateful to everyone who contributed their time and energy. Not only has the exterior of the school been transformed to a fresh new colour, but the project has also strengthened the bond between the school and the community.
Trudy Spillane, Interim Executive Principal of Drapers’ Pyrgo Priory School, said: “Drapers’ Pyrgo Priory School is a truly special place, and our buildings and facilities needed a refresh to match this. The new blue-shade responds to the colour of the sky, blending into the natural environment and transforming a tired, old building into a vibrant new version. It’s inspiring to see how our staff and volunteers came together, reflecting the pride we all feel for the school. I am deeply thankful to the site team, Dulux Decorator Centre and the GRAHAM volunteers for their efforts in managing and resourcing this project to help us take Drapers’ Pyrgo into its next phase of teaching and learning. We want our school to provide an inspirational and inviting learning environment for our pupils and we have a range of improvement works planned for this academic year, with several projects already completed over the summer break. We are already seeing the positive impact of these upgrades, with the school community offering praise and enthusiasm for the changes.”
Over the summer the school Nursery also received a refreshed look, transforming the area into a dynamic and welcoming space with bright, fresh colours and modern furnishings that create a stimulating environment for young children. The updated space features engaging learning areas, cozy nooks for quiet time, and interactive play zones that foster both creativity and exploration.
Other improvement works that have recently taken place at the school include enhancements to the Early Years Reception playground, renovation of the school office area, refurbishing of the original parquet flooring in the school entrance, and a newly constructed pathway to connect the gates on Dagnam Park Drive to the school entrance, offering parents and pupils a secure and easily accessible route for drop-off and pick-up.
Drapers’ Pyrgo Priory School will be offering tours of both the Nursery and Primary facilities throughout the Autumn term. Please contact the school office to book your place.
